We tested: Gemini in Kiswahili
Strong on translation and images, with one real advantage: it can search the web.
What it is: an AI assistant from Google. You reach it at gemini.google.com or through an app.
Price: there is a free tier, plus paid tiers with more capability.
Its Kiswahili
We gave it the same jobs we gave ChatGPT. The translation was slightly better, especially on long sentences. Ordinary writing was on a par with its rival.
The big difference: Gemini can search the web and show source links. That reduces the making-things-up problem on recent matters, though it does not remove it. Twice we saw it produce a link that did not contain the fact it cited.
It also understands images. We photographed a page of a maths textbook and asked for an explanation in Kiswahili — it did well.
Where it fails
Its Kiswahili sometimes mixes English into the middle of a sentence. Say "write in Kiswahili only" and it corrects itself.
For smaller Tanzanian places and market prices, it is still not reliable.
Our verdict
If you need translation, reading from photos, or answers with sources, Gemini is a good choice. If you are just starting, both are equally easy — try both in one day, then pick.
