Why this site exists
Artificial intelligence is changing the world quickly. The reporting on that change is written in English, for readers in America and Europe, and often in heavy technical language. A Tanzanian who wants to know what is happening has to wait, translate it themselves, or miss it entirely.
Pashavo tries to remove that wait. Every story that matters is written afresh in Kiswahili — not translated word for word, but explained from the meaning, the way a friend who understands it would explain it to you. Then we add the part the foreign press leaves out: what does this mean for you?
Our name
Pashavo comes from the Kiswahili kupasha habari: to pass the news on. That is the job, every day, in your own language.
Who runs it
Pashavo is run by a Tanzanian living in the Bay Area, California — where much of this technology is being built. The aim is simple: any Tanzanian should get accurate AI news at the same time as the rest of the world, in their own language.
How the stories are written
We collect stories from trusted sources every day. An AI system helps prepare a draft in Kiswahili and English, and then a human editor reads every story before it is published. Nothing is published unreviewed.
We keep a glossary that holds our technical terms steady across every story. When a hard term appears, it is explained the first time and then used the same way everywhere. There is more on the how we choose stories page.
Free, and staying free
No charges, no paywall, no sign-up required to read. The site is built to stay light on slow connections and inexpensive phones.
Mistakes
We will get things wrong sometimes. If you spot a factual error or Kiswahili that does not read well, tell us through the question box. We correct it and say what changed.
