Google launches Skilling Africa: learn AI for free in Swahili, even offline

Google's new hub, launched on November 2, gathers more than 15 of its training programmes in one place — free, in Swahili, with lessons you can download and study without internet.

Google has launched a new free learning hub called Skilling Africa with Google, available across Africa from November 2, 2026. The hub gathers more than 15 of Google's training programmes in one place, instead of hunting for each programme separately.

Among them are Google Career Certificates, offering job credentials in fields such as IT support, data analytics and cybersecurity; Hustle Academy, for small and medium businesses; and Google Cloud Skills, for developers and IT professionals. Lessons cover artificial intelligence, cloud, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing, entrepreneurship and career development — split into short modules you can learn little by little.

Google says its goal is to reach 3 million people across Africa with digital and AI skills by 2030, with a first target of 250,000 graduates by the end of 2026. The company says the initiative builds on its earlier work, which reached more than 7 million young Africans with foundational digital training.

The hub is designed for African realities: you can download short lessons while on Wi-Fi, then complete them entirely offline, without using mobile data. It works on entry-level smartphones and on computers, and you do not need to download another app — you sign in with your Google account in one click.

Inside the hub is an AI study companion called SCOUT, short for Smart Companion for Online Understanding and Training. It answers your questions, explains difficult concepts, suggests your next step and helps you plan a study schedule around your own goals. There is also gamified learning: skill trees, learning streaks and verifiable badges you can show employers or clients.

For Pashavo readers, one detail matters most: the hub currently supports English, Swahili and Arabic, with more African languages, including Hausa, being prepared for addition. You can reach it at skillingafrica.withgoogle.com.

Google says Africa stands before an AI-driven economic opportunity worth an estimated $2.9 trillion, but more than 90% of companies in the region report a critical shortage of AI-ready professionals. Alex Okosi, managing director of Google Africa, says: "Our ambition to equip 3 million people by 2030 reflects our commitment to helping Africans build the skills they need to participate in and contribute to the digital economy."

What does this mean for you?

For a Swahili-speaking reader, this is a practical opportunity, not just an announcement. If you have a phone and occasional Wi-Fi — even if your data is scarce — you can download lessons and learn AI and digital skills in your own language, for free. That matters most for students, job seekers and small business owners: the certificates and badges you earn can go on your profile or be shown to clients.

Start with one thing that directly concerns you: if you are looking for work, try the Career Certificates; if you run a business, start with Hustle Academy; if you love technology, try Cloud Skills. Do not try to learn everything at once — finish one short module offline, then decide the next step. And remember: SCOUT is a study helper, not a real teacher — make sure you practise what you learn on real work, because that is the skill an employer counts.
