We tested: ChatGPT in Kiswahili
Its Kiswahili is good for everyday writing, but it slips on present-day Tanzanian specifics.
What it is: an AI chatbot from OpenAI. You open it in a browser or an app.
Price: there is a free tier with a daily usage limit, and a paid monthly plan. The free tier is enough for a beginner.
Its Kiswahili
We gave it four jobs: write a job application letter, summarise a long article, explain the concept of interest to a farmer, and translate a paragraph from English.
The letter and the summary were good. The Kiswahili was grammatically correct and clear. The explanation of interest was good after we said "explain it to someone who has not studied economics" — the first answer was far too bookish.
The translation was accurate but used formal standard Kiswahili that you do not hear on the street. Say "use everyday Dar Kiswahili" and it shifts.
Where it fails
When we asked about current prices, government offices, and this week's events, the answers were invented or out of date. Asked about smaller Tanzanian places, it confused names.
Our verdict
Good for writing, explanation and school practice. Not a source for present-day Tanzanian information. For a beginner it is the easiest place to start, because it is simple to use and has a free tier.
