ChatGPT can now read your Chrome tabs and do tasks for you: OpenAI rolls out new extension update
OpenAI's updated ChatGPT extension for Chrome lets the AI read across your open tabs, compare product prices, and even fill in forms — and it's available on every ChatGPT plan.
OpenAI has rolled out a major upgrade to its ChatGPT extension for the Chrome browser. The company announced the update on October 15, 2026, and news reports followed on October 16.
The upgraded extension has two working modes. The first is Chat mode: tag "Chrome" in the ChatGPT web or desktop app, and the assistant can read across all your open tabs, gathering information from those pages. OpenAI demonstrated comparing three sofas by dimensions, material, delivery time, and return policy — no more jumping from page to page yourself.
The second is Work mode: here ChatGPT can act on your tabs — send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize a cluttered row of tabs into topic folders. These actions run in the background alongside you, without taking over your screen, so you can keep browsing while ChatGPT does its work.
The extension also gains a sidebar showing your full ChatGPT conversation history next to any page, and it works across Chromium browsers including Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera. The update is available on every ChatGPT plan, and the Chrome Web Store listing showed 7 million users as of October 16.
On privacy: ChatGPT asks your permission before interacting with each new website by default, and access to browsing history needs a separate request — it cannot be set to always allow. But the extension's install prompts may include reading and changing data on all websites, plus browsing history, bookmarks, and downloads — worth weighing before you accept.
The update follows the retirement of OpenAI's own Atlas browser on August 9, 2026. The message is clear: OpenAI is now battling Anthropic — whose Claude Cowork is the direct rival — in the race for AI agents that work inside the browser.
What does this mean for you?
For small businesses: Compare wholesale supplier prices across tabs quickly, without copy-pasting. Before handing ChatGPT tasks involving accounts or payments, review the permissions you grant.
For students: Chat can gather information from research sources across tabs, and Work can organize them by topic. Remember: AI can get things wrong — verify key facts before submitting work.
For parents and teachers: The permissions the extension asks for are a good moment to talk digital privacy with children: understanding permissions before accepting is an essential skill.
